Today 5G had Watermelon Day! The students participated in Maths activities that were inspired by watermelon and other fruits. 5G named the fruit Walter the Watermelon, Spike the Pineapple and Alpha the Rockmelon. The first part of the day involved the students working in mixed ability groups completing Maths activities and challenges. They had to create a clock face that looked like a watermelon and have the numbers evenly spaced as well as try and find the circumference of each of the fruit. This proved to be tricky as the fruits all had curved surfaces! 5G then took Walter, Spike and Alpha for a swim ( in a bucket of water) to find out their capacity and volume. The students compared each fruit and discussed why each fruit had different capacities. We also investigated the speed of each pieces of fruit by rolling them down different ramps including the big one outside our classroom. The students discussed why certain fruits were faster than others, what affected the speed of each fruit and how we could ensure accurate results. Unfortunately, Walter the Watermelon had a crash and did not survive going down the giant ramp! To finish off the day, 5G created watermelon artworks to display in the classroom singing along to the watermelon song!
